Britney Spears got her stay in a psychiatric ward extended Sunday, as doctors decided to keep her hospitalized an additional 14 days, someone close to the pop star told the Associated Press.

Spears was to be released from UCLA Medical Center’s psychiatric hospital Sunday, but doctors and a medical officer at the ward determined that she should remain, said the person, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Spears was committed Thursday for a 72-hour hold for evaluation. Paramedics, flanked by a police escort of about a dozen officers on motorcycles, in cars and a helicopter, took Spears from her home to the psychiatric hospital before dawn.

To extend her stay, hospital staff members cited a section in the state law that allows patients to be retained for medical treatment if they are found to be gravely disabled or a danger to themselves or others, the person said.

A UCLA Medical Center spokesman did not immediately return a phone message Sunday seeking comment. Calls to attorneys Sorrell Trope, Spears’ personal lawyer, and Andrew Wallet, also were not returned.

Court Commissioner Reva Goetz ruled the day after Spears was hospitalized and following a year of increasingly bizarre public behavior that she needed to have someone else take over her personal and financial affairs.

Goetz named Spears’ father, James Spears, as her conservator. Goetz also named Spears father and Wallet as conservators of the pop star’s estate. A court creates a conservatorship when it concludes a person no longer can care for themselves or their personal and financial affairs.

In placing Spears in one, Goetz also issued a restraining order, keeping Sam Lutfi, the pop star’s friend and sometime manager, away from her.

Goetz also granted the conservator access to Spears’ medical records, as well as the right to restrict her visitors and to provide her with around-the-clock security. She ordered a hearing Monday to review the matter.

Spears’ current hospitalization is the second this year for the 26-year-old singer, who has been in spiral of bizarre behavior since November 2006, when she filed for divorce from Kevin Federline, the father of her sons, 1-year-old Jayden James and 2-year-old Sean Preston.

Since her breakup with Federline, Spears has been seen at public events in short skirts and without underwear, has shaved her head bald, run over a photographer’s foot with her car, left the scene of a fender bender, flogged another car with an umbrella and abandoned a car in traffic when it had a flat tire.

Recently, she was seen sitting on a sidewalk, holding her pet dog and crying.

Spears was hospitalized on Jan. 3 after police were called to her home when she refused to return her children to Federline following a visit. That episode resulted in her losing custody of her sons.

“Eva has been working hard for the past year and made a positive decision to take some much-needed time off to proactively attend to some personal issues that, while not critical, she felt deserved some outside professional support,” the actress’ publicist, Brad Cafarelli, said Friday in a statement.

The celebrity Web site TMZ reported Friday that Mendes had checked into a Utah rehab center for substance abuse.

Mendes’ screen credits include “Training Day,” “2 Fast 2 Furious,” “Hitch” and “Ghost Rider.”

Paula Abdul, who has a new song with fellow “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson, blames a plane mishap for keeping her out of the musical arena for more than a decade.

“I’ve been really, really blessed and fortunate and it’s really, really poignant for me to come back now,” Abdul, who is one of the pre-Super Bowl performers, told The Associated Press on Saturday.

Abdul is featured on the first single off the new album from Jackson, due out next month. The song is titled “Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow.”

Abdul says an emergency plane landing that caused her injury in 1992 — she calls it a “plane crash” — was a key reason why she abandoned her multiplatinum singing career (she hasn’t released a new album since 1995).

“I had four plates and fourteen cervical spinal surgeries,” Abdul said while she picked up items Saturday at The Retreat at Super Bowl XLII, a celebrity gifting suite. “It all happened during the time that I disappeared and no one knew where I went. For five and a half years, I went through paralysis, the worst experience, and then I came back on ‘American Idol,’ that was my first time back out there.”

Abdul decided to return to music when Jackson asked her to be one of the artists on “Randy Jackson’s Musical Club, Vol. 1.”

“Everything felt right. The song was amazing,” said Abdul, who added that she just finished a video for the song: “I’m dancing — wait to you see me,” she said. “I’m doing things that you won’t believe, that I don’t even believe.”

She’s already started work on a new album that she expects to be released by the summer.

As for her other job, “American Idol,” Abdul claims that this season’s talent is the strongest yet.

“All the fat is trimmed, meaning that it’s prime rib the whole lot,” she said. “If we do it right and America does it right there could be a top twelve that are of the likes of Daughtry, Kelly, Carrie, I’m telling, you’re in for an amazing season.”

Paris Hilton’s friday night guest appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman differed from her last, in September, when the CBS host couldn’t stop badgering her about her just-finished jail sentence. 

“We have a lovely woman who’s been in prison,” Letterman said Friday, explaining why he previously behaved the way he did. “I put those two things together and my head starts spinning.”

Tyra Banks threw a baby shower for Jessica Alba on her talk show yesterday (Jan 31, 2008). The former supermodel filled the stage with balloons and gifts as pregnant Jessica appeared on the show to promote her new movie “The Eye.”

Included among the presents were a pushchair, bassinet, toys and clothes at a total cost of $6,000.

Jessica – who is expecting her first child, rumored to be a boy, with fiance Cash Warren – revealed she was learning to cope with her ever-expanding breasts.

She said: “I’ve never dealt with cleavage before - it’s a whole new thing.”

The episode is set to air on US TV today (Feb 1, 2008).

Meanwhile, Jessica has admitted the baby wasn’t planned but was a pleasant surprise.

She told America’s “The Today Show”: “I’ve always loved kids and I’ve always wanted kids, so this is kind of perfect.”

“I feel really blessed. I feel really lucky. This is the best time ever. It’s the best year.”

When asked about her plans to marry Cash, the 26-year-old beauty remained coy on the subject.

She said: “I’ve thought about getting married. I’ve thought about it, yeah.”

Mary Lynn Rajskub, who plays computer whiz Chloe O’Brian on Fox’s 24, is pregnant, she says.

Rajskub, 36, and her live-in boyfriend Matthew Rolph, 27, a personal trainer, are expecting their first child at the end of the summer.

“With the strike going on, I had to keep busy!” Rajskub jokes. “We are thrilled and couldn’t be more excited.”

Rajskub recently attended the Sundance Film Festival promoting Sunshine Cleaning, in which she costars opposite Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. On Friday, Rajskub will make an appearance walking in the Red Dress Fashion Show to benefit The Heart Truth in New York.

Pop star Britney Spears’ zombie dance at the MTV Video Music Awards has landed at sixth position.

The moment when Paris Hilton cried for her mommy after a judge sent the hotel heiress back to jail was placed at the second position, reports the New York Daily News.

At number four was former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff’s moment drinking in the shower.

However, Columbia Univeristy President Lee Bollinger slamming Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after inviting him to speak on campus has topped the list.

Bollinger took a lot of flack for hosting Ahmadinejad, who has called for Israel’s annihilation and questioned the existence of the Holocaust. But Bollinger took even more criticism for introducing the dictator as ‘a petty and cruel dictator.’

The St. Trinian’s star has no problem baring all if the role requires it, but claims she just hadn’t the opportunity yet.

Mischa, 21, said: “I don’t mind nudity. I just don’t do it that often. It depends on the film and if I trust the director and if the context is emotional or just sexual.”

The actress is rumored to have been offered the starring role in the new Supergirl movie, and admits she would love to play the sexy heroine.

She said: “It would be pretty awesome. But everybody in Hollywood goes up for those films. I haven’t been offered anything.”

The former star of The O.C. has also spoken about her last appearance as rebellious teenager Marissa Cooper in the hit US TV show.

Mischa admits she loved filming Marissa’s car crash death scene and kept demanding it be made gorier.

She added to Maxim magazine: “You have no idea how much fun I had doing that scene. I was on the set, yelling, ‘More blood! More blood!’ She needed to go out with a bang.”
